Breaking the Risk Cycle: How Nursing Leads NCD Prevention in Chronic Alcohol Users at CAPS

Introduction: The Double Risk at CAPS Individuals undergoing treatment for alcoholism at the Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) face a double vulnerability: chemical dependency and a high risk of developing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases and cirrhosis. Health interventions must be comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and sensitive to the diverse dimensions of the problem.

The Authority of Nursing in Integrated Treatment Our work demonstrates the effectiveness of extension projects and health education within the CAPS environment, aiming for awareness, risk prevention, and the promotion of self-care.

  • Multidimensional Focus: Nursing aims not only for abstinence but for the promotion of mental health and general well-being of patients. Through education on the damages of excessive consumption and guidance toward specialized treatment, the nurse strengthens the therapeutic process and interaction within the support group.
  • The Power of Playful Education and Spirituality: Experience shows that actions utilizing metaphor and hope (such as group dynamics and moments of spirituality) are effective tools to help dependents overcome addiction and rebuild their lives, offering support that goes beyond medication.

Impact on NCDs and Public Health Alcoholism is a significant risk factor for the onset of NCDs and imposes enormous expenses on the Unified Health System (SUS).

  • Cost and Harm Mitigation: By encouraging self-care and treatment adherence, the nurse acts directly on the reduction of systemic harm and the mitigation of probable expenses for the public health system. Continuous interventions at CAPS prove crucial for the long-term reduction of substance use.

Conclusion: The role of Nursing at CAPS is one of community leadership and risk management. With an approach that integrates the science of NCD prevention with psychosocial and spiritual support, we ensure that the chronic alcohol user has the necessary tools for a better quality of life and a healthier future.
